The Right Tool For The Job

Have you ever cut open a box with a pen? Tried to get spinach out of your teeth with a straw? Attempted to make a word doc function as a spreadsheet? Of course you have. How well did any of those things work out? Maybe they did, maybe they didn’t, but they would have worked out better and saved so much time if you had just used the right tool for the job, no?

Creating an online event is no different. If you don’t use the right tool for the job, you will work much harder than you have to. You may spend hours trying to make a product do something it isn’t designed to do, to get an outcome it was never designed to give you. After defining the goals and objectives of the online event and deciding what you want the attendee experience to be, find an online platform product that serves your needs.

When you find the right company to partner with, you will be amazed at how efficiently you can function and how much of a cost savings that can bring to the project (see my blog Grab Your Partner and Do-Si-Do on building a quality partnership). Not only that, but if you find a gap in their services, most good partners will work with you to create something. Did you know that some online platform partners have these amazing people called developers? They’re like magicians! Our organization was able to create a fantastic virtual tradeshow experience from a vision by working with the right partner for the job.

Oftentimes, these partners have other partners they have worked with who can fill the gap if they can’t. By having open lines of communication you can get to the best solution to fill the need you have so you are not putting a bandaid on a bullet hole or plugging a leaky pipe with chewing gum.

So, work smarter, not harder. Learn the difference between a document and a spreadsheet. Take the time to find an online platform provider that can make your online event act and look like you want it to. And…always carry a picket knife.
