How Do You Manage?

This blog is a little more sassy-girl rant than super helpful event advice. I have served the public my whole life, it’s how I’m wired. I love to see others succeed, enjoy themselves, or get what they need. I have worked in medicine, been on a church staff, and served in a non-profit organization. I have worked in the events world for over 16 years. As I prepared for one of my events this year, I have to say, people seemed to be the laziest I’ve ever encountered.

I completely understand that there will always be people who need a little extra assistance; they may be technologically challenged, not comfortable with English, unfamiliar with the area or the subject matter, and the like. It’s part of customer service. I have worked with organizations who do an above-and-beyond job of educating and over-communicating expectations, information, how-to’s, directions, step-by-step instructions, and FAQ’s.

When sending emails, I try to make them brief or bulleted, put the most important information at the top, and highlight critical information. Historically, this has worked out pretty well.

I don’t know if it’s the “social-lobotomy-post-Covid”, the “stay-at-home-in-my-yoga-pants” dress code, or the “I-can’t-be-bothered-to-read-emails-for-myself” tactic, but the amount of questions received from people who reply using the email they received containing the very information in question is ridiculous. Did you even read the email? Clearly not. If you read the email in the first place, you would have the information you are asking for. Why do people expect to be spoon-fed instead of read a simple email? How do you manage to get home at the end of the day? Does someone have to show you the way? Does someone tell you when it’s time to eat? Doubtful.

People, we need to get back into the game of life, make an attempt to solve a problem on our own, put in a little effort before hitting the easy button just because we can. Use our brains before they completely turn into mush. Covid was only a couple of years of our entire lives but it seems like we have completely forgotten how to function.

The great shut-down of 2020 helped us create some bad, lazy habits. It’s time to undo what was done and do things again!

As an event planner, have you experienced any of this post-shut-down behavior? How have you handled it? Share it here or email me, I’d love to hear your stories!
